Gary Wolfe is a hybrid, painter-sculptor living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received his BFA in painting from the University of Minnesota in 2002.

Soon after graduating he moved across seas, taught English in Japan part-time, explored traditional and contemporary Japanese art and established Saruana (“Monkey-hole”) Studios to promote other international and local emerging artists in Japan’s southern Kyushu prefecture.

Since returning to Minnesota, he has been a volunteer at the Soap Factory, a contemporary and experimental gallery for the past three years. He helped co-curate "minimal-manimal" there last fall during the volunteer biennale and exhibited the largest mural collaboration to date. “I not only like to be referred to as a hybrid artist, but I enjoy collaborating with other artists across various media, on many levels and being part of the circle.”

Working in metal through the mantra, SCRAPINGBY and the Japanese artistic notion of finding beauty in the natural cycles of growth and decay are at the center of his creative process. “The imperfections of steel as it oxidizes and the idea that beauty is fleeting are where I find balance, tranquility, peace and harmony of my surroundings.”
